Hello and welcome to 7th and 8th Grade Science! My name is Ms. Trainer and I've been a part of the Sauganash Elementary School community going on seven years. Prior to joining Sauganash's team, I worked at another CPS school teaching 6th grade science and math.
I have not always worked within the education sector. My undergraduate degree from BGSU is a Bachelor of Arts in General Business with a double minor in Art and Sociology. I worked for a large insurance company as an education coordinator and a private commercial real estate company that focused on accounting and lease administration as an account manager. These were good jobs, but it was not the right fit for me. I chose to earn my Masters in Education - Elementary Education degree from UIC because of their focus on urban schooling. I specifically wanted to work for a CPS school and am grateful to have been given the opportunity.
During my teaching tenure, I earned a M.A.T. in Biological Sciences through Miami University of Ohio. This program had a focus on community conservation and education. Through this program, I was able to travel to the Baja Peninsula, Thailand, and Namibia. Themes from these courses have been integrated into the science classes and help to bring a global perspective to learning.
In addition to formal schooling, I have also received certification as a National Geographic Certified Educator and a certified Google Educator - Level 1.
In 2015 - 2017, I worked as one of twenty-four state facilitators on the I-STEM MSRP Grant. For this project, the Area Teacher Leaders travel to ISU for a two week training (Year 1: NGSX, Year 2,3: IMSA) and then redeliver this information in their area to roughly forty science teachers. I have also worked with the CPS Department of Science as a member of the Middle School Advisory Council, a facilitator for Saturday Professional Development, a facilitator for a Professional Learning Community, and as a part of the Professional Development Leadership Academy.
I was selected as a National Geographic and Lindblad Expeditions Grosvenor Teacher Fellow in 2017, a TeachPlus Teacher Policy Fellow in 2018, and an EPI Teacher Fellow in 2019. I am currently working with ISBE as a state assessment item writer, collaborating with different middle school science teachers around the state of Illinois.
I believe that children engage in science in their everyday lives, asking questions and seeking answers. In these courses, students will engage in scientific learning and critical examination of their natural world.
This will be a great year!
